Daily GK Update 6th July 2014

1) More Indians to return from Iraq
i) Nearly 600 Indian nationals will come back from conflict-hit Iraq by Monday. About 200 of them returned by an Iraqi Airways special chartered flight from Najaf on Saturday night, External Affairs Ministry
ii) “The return of Indians from Iraq has gathered pace,” the Spokesperson in External Affairs Minister said, adding apart from 200 Indian nationals, another 400 Indian nationals would be returning to various destinations in India, including Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad, through commercial flights by Monday.

2) Korea keen to work with TN
i) The Consul-General of the Republic of Korea, Kim Kyungsoo, who was on a three-day visit to the city, said that Korea was interested in contributing more to the development of the State. He said the Consulate General had begun functioning in Chennai from February and there were about 4,000 members engaged mainly in manufacturing operations and automobile industries in Chennai. He also said he could see Korean manufacturing units setting up shop.

3) Pakistan: New chief justice takes charge
i) Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk, who recently cautioned against “undue interference” in the functioning of Pakistan’s state institutions, was on Sunday sworn in as the country’s new chief justice.
ii) 63-year-old Mulk, Supreme Court’s senior most judge, took over from his predecessor Tassaduq Hussain Jillani.
iii) President Mamnoon Hussain sworn in the new chief justice at a ceremony attended by Prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his cabinet members and other senior officials.

4) British ministers to meet Modi
i) Bilateral trade and economic relations will be high on the agenda when two top British ministers will have meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and their counterparts separately on Tuesday.
ii) Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs William Hague and Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne will arrive in Mumbai tomorrow on a two-day visit and hold meetings in Delhi on Tuesday.

5) ICC chairman Srinivasan pays Jaitley ‘courtesy visit’
i) Days before the union budget on July 10, cricket administrator N Srinivasan met finance minister Arun Jaitley in North Block on a seemingly hectic Sunday afternoon and later called his visit a “courtesy call” after being appointed the first ICC chairman last month.
ii) It was Srinivasan’s second meeting with Jaitley, a former BCCI vice-president, after the two had met here early last month. The meeting today lasted for around 40 minutes and the Tamil Nadu strongman said nothing specific was discussed.

6) Novak Djokovic edges past Roger Federer to win seventh Grand Slam title
i)  Top seed Novak Djokovic edges past Roger Federer 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 in an epic Wimbledon final on Sunday to win his seventh Grand Slam title.
