1. ISRO
launched IRNSS-1H satellite from PSLV C39
i. Indian
Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has launched its navigation satellite
‘IRNSS-1H’ from Satish Dhavan Space Centre at Sriharikotta, on board the rocket
PSLV C39.
ii. The
PSLV-C39 has failed in its mission, as its heat shield failed to
separate, preventing the satellite IRNSS-1H to reach its designated orbit.
iii. The
satellite IRNSS-1H is a part of the indigenous navigation system called
‘NavIC’.
iv. NavIC
system is equivalent to the GPS service, having the footprint over the whole of
India and about 1500 kilometers from its borders on all sides.
v. It helps
user agencies to plan and monitor their vehicular movement on the road and on
the sea.
vi. It can
alert fishermen while approaching international maritime boundaries and help
public to locate precisely the addresses they require.
2. Maneka
Gandhi gives away national awards to Anganwadi workers
i. The Union
Women and Child Development Minister ‘Maneka Gandhi’ has conferred national
awards to Anganwadi workers for their exceptional achievements.
ii. A total
of 51 Anganwadi workers from different States and union territories will be
conferred award for 2016-17.
iii. The
award is given to the Anganwadi workers nominated by the States and Union
Territories.
vi. The
Award comprises of 25 thousand rupees cash and a citation.
3. Indian
Hotels Company appoints Puneet Chhatwal as MD and CEO
i. Indian
Hotels Company Limited (runs the Taj chain of hotels) has appointed India-born
Puneet Chhatwal as its Managing Director (MD) chief executive officer(CEO).
ii. He will
replace Rakesh Sarna who is stepping down from 30thSeptember 2017.
iii. Chhatwal
attended Delhi Public School (DPS) in Mathura Road, pursued a degree in hotel
management at IHM, Pusa Road.
iv. He has
completed his masters in hospitality administration from ESSEC Business School
in France.
4. Shripad
Naik inaugurates Sankalp Se Siddhi program at Goa
i. The Union
Minister of state (independent charge), AYUSH Shripad Naik has inaugurated the
Sankalp Se Siddhi - New India Manthan program at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, ICAR
(Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute) in Old Goa.
ii. More
than 100 farmers attended the event.
iii. He
encouraged farmers to speed up efforts in farming and said farming must be
incentivized to attract the youth.
5. Govt.
approves increase in income criteria for Creamy Layer
i. The union
Govt. has approved an increase in income criteria for the creamy layer for
excluding socially advanced persons from the purview of reservation of other
backward classes (OBC) from six to eight lakh
rupees per annum.
ii. Now,
more people to take advantage of reservation benefits extended to the OBCs in
government services and in admission to Central educational institutions.
iii. The
income limit is based on the increase in consumer price index.
iv. Norms
for establishing the equivalence of posts in CPSUs, banks and insurance
institutions with posts in government for claiming benefit of OBC reservation.
v. The
children of those serving in lower categories in PSUs and other institutions
can get the benefit of OBC reservation on par with children of people serving
in lower categories in government.
vi. It will
also give a more level-playing field to genuine non-creamy layer candidates.
6. Swiss
President Doris Leuthard to hold talks with PM Modi
i. President
of Swiss Confederation ‘Ms. Doris Leuthard’ arrived in New Delhi on a three-day
visit to India.
ii. She will
hold talks with President ‘Ramnath Kovind’ and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in
New Delhi.
iii. The
Swiss leader is being accompanied by senior Government officials and a large
business delegation of leading Swiss companies.
iv. India
and Switzerland enjoy robust economic ties, with Switzerland being seventh
largest trading partner and eleventh largest foreign investor in India.
v. It will
provide an opportunity to both sides for holding wide-ranging discussions on
bilateral, global and regional issues of mutual interest.
7. CDC
of Nepal submits its report with 165 electoral constituencies
i. The
Constituency Delimitation Commission (CDC) of Nepal chairman Kamal Narayan Das
has submitted its report to Nepal’s Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba at
Kathmandu.
ii. The
Commission has recommended 165 constituencies for the of House
of Representatives and 330 for Provincial Assemblies.
iii. Ninety
percent weight age has been given to population and 10 percent to geography.
iv. Capital
Kathmandu will have the highest 10 constituencies.
8. Two-day
Indian Ocean Conference in Colombo
i. Two-day
Indian Ocean Conference 2017 being organized by India Foundation in Temple
Trees (official residence of the Lankan prime minister) in Colombo.
ii. The
theme of this year’s conference is Peace, Progress and Prosperity and will
involve participants from more than 35 countries.
iii. This
will be second IOC conference (first edition-Sep16 in Singapore).
9. NTPC
signs Rs. 3,000 crore term loan agreement with ICICI Bank
i. National
Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) has signed a term loan agreement for
Rs. 3,000 crores with ICICI Bank Ltd for partially funding its capital
expenditure.
ii. The loan
which has a door-to-door tenure of 15 years will be utilized to part finance
the capital expenditure of NTPC.
iii. NTPC
commissioned 3,845 MW capacity and added 2,190 MW to its commercial capacity
during 2016-17.
10. Almost
99% of demonetized notes back in system: RBI report
i. The
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) confirmed in its annual report that almost 99% of
banned Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes that were demonetized last November have
returned to the system.
ii. Out of
632.6 crore pieces of Rs 1,000 currency notes in circulation, 8.9 crores have
not been returned post the note ban last November.
iii. The
cost of printing of currency notes more than doubled to Rs 7,965 crore in
2016-17 from Rs 3,421 crore in the previous year on account of new currency
printing.
iv. As of 31st March
2017, there was as many 588.2 crores of Rs 500 notes (both old and new) in
circulation.
v. As of 31st March
2016, there was 1,570.7 crore Rs 500 notes in circulation.
