
1. India and Kazakhstan sign Protocol to amend DTAC
i. India and Kazakhstan have signed a Protocol to amend the existing Double
Taxation Avoidance Convention (DTAC) between the two countries in New Delhi.
ii. The DTAC between both countries was earlier signed in December 1996 for the
avoidance of double taxation and for the prevention of fiscal evasion with
respect to taxes on income.
2. Veteran actor Om Puri passes away
i. Veteran actor Om Puri passed away following massive cardiac arrest in
Mumbai, Maharashtra.
ii. He was 66. His acting credits include appearances in commercial Indian,
British, and Hollywood, independent films and art films.
3. 16th meeting of FSDC held in New Delhi
i. The 16th meeting of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC)
was held in New Delhi. It was chaired by Union Finance Minister Arun
Jaitley.
ii. It was attended by heads of all financial sector regulators as its members.
It reviewed the major issues and challenges facing the economy.
4. Government constitutes Injeti
Srinivas Committee to frame National Sports Code
i. The Union Sports Ministry has constituted committee to frame comprehensive
National Sports Development Code across sports disciplines.
ii. It will be headed by Injeti
Srinivas, Sports Secretary. The committee will study the existing sports
governance frame work, issues relating to sports governance in the country,
recent developments related to sports governance.
5. UN declares 2017 as the International
Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development
i. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has declared the year
2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.
ii. The declaration recalls the potential of tourism sector to advance the
universal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and 17 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs).
6. Noted Manipur based historian
Gangmumei Kamei passes away
i. Noted Manipur-based historian, litterateur and scholar Gangmumei Kamei
passed away in Imphal following protracted illness. He was 77.
ii. Kamei was currently a member of the
North Eastern Council (NEC). Earlier, he had served as a minister in Manipur on
two occasions.
7. Gandhinagar becomes India's first
model Smart City
i. Gandhinagar may not have made it in the first two rounds of shortlisting by
the Ministry of Urban Development, but it has unarguably become the first city
in the country to go smart.
ii. From seamless WiFi connectivity to smart sensor-enabled traffic lights that
brighten or dim based on vehicular traffic, the first phase of the smart city
project has been rolled out in the capital city of Gujarat ahead of Vibrant
Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) 2017 by Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC).
8. Three Days International Conference on Yoga for
Diabetes Organised in New Delhi
i.The
Minister of State for AYUSH Shri Shripad
Yesso Naik inaugurated the International Conference on “Yoga for Diabetes”
which began in New Delhi on January 4, 2017.
ii.The three days conference aims to generate discussions on the role of Yoga
in the prevention and management of Diabetes and draw up a roadmap to be
adopted for the control of Diabetes through Yoga.
9. Island
Tourism Festival 2017 to begins in Andaman & Nicobar
i.The
Island Tourism Festival 2017 will begin today at Port Blair in Andaman &
Nicobar islands. Lt. Governor Jagdish Mukhi will inaugurate the mega event at
ITF Ground this evening.
ii. During the 10-day event, performances by the cultural troupes from mainland
will help the Islanders renew their cultural ties with mainland India.
10. Karnataka
Bank launches group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme named KBL Suraksha
i.Karnataka
Bank has launched a month-long campaign to promote a group personal accident
insurance scheme for savings bank account-holders. ‘KBL Suraksha’, which was launched
on January 2, will be in force till January 31.
ii.Launched in association with Universal Sompo General Insurance, KBL Suraksha
provides coverage against all types of accidental deaths.
iii.All savings bank account-holders of the bank in the age group of 18-70
years can subscribe to this scheme by paying an annual premium of 100 for 10
lakh and 50 for 5 lakh coverage.
11. Book
on Dr. Kalam titled 'The People’s President: Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam' released
i.Vice
President Hamid Ansari on 4 January 2017 released a book titled The People's
President: Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
ii.The book was released at a function
in New Delhi which was attended by Union Finance.
12. Sir
Tim Barrow has been appointed as the Britain’s ambassador to the EU
i.UK
Senior diplomat Sir Tim Barrow was appointed the new ambassador to the European
Union (EU). ii.He replaced Sir Ivan Rogers.He previously served in
the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as a representative to various bodies of
the European Union, and as British Ambassador to Ukraine 2006–2008.
